Flavor of America in Vienna - Wine Edition 2019
Wine Edition deluxe
When Trevor Traina, United States Ambassador to Austria, and Wolfgang Rosam, publisher of Falstaff Magazine, join forces to host a wine reception, you can expect it to be an extraordinary event. Trevor Traina is not only a wine expert, his ties to Austria go back to his grandfather's generation. Wolfgang Rosam is known beyond the wine industry as a legendary PR professional.
American wines in Austria
American wines have long since ceased to be an insider tip, yet many Austrians prefer to fall back on domestic wines. Especially when it comes to wine from the New World, there is often still a certain skepticism. So it was all the nicer to be invited by Falstaff Magazine to the exclusive tasting "Flavor of America in Vienna - Wine Edition". Together with the American Embassy, the well-known gourmet magazine organized an exciting tasting in an exquisite setting.

Ambassador Trevor Traina welcomes the guests
The tasting was for invited guests only and took place in the modern renovated Palais Wertheim in Vienna. After the warm welcome at the reception, we went down the stairs to the tasting. Here you could see for yourself what the American wine market has to offer. But more about that later.
The whole event was opened with an official welcome by the Ambassador of the United States, Trevor Traina and Wolfgang Rosam, the publisher of Falstaff Magazine. Since the whole thing was held on a smaller scale, the speeches also featured personal anecdotes that went well with the pleasant atmosphere in the room.
Wines from California, Oregon & Washington
The focus of the table tasting this afternoon was on the states of California, Oregon & Washington. Considering the top quality that these countries bring to the world market in terms of wine year after year, this geographical delimitation was all the more gratifying. Of course, pretty much all the big names in the American wine industry were represented. From Charles Smith, to Robert Mondavi, Ravenswood, Hess Collection, to Caymus, Buccella, and William Hill, pretty much all of the top wines from those regions were represented that day. In addition to Chardonnays, Zinfandels and Cabernet Sauvignons with different vintages, one could also taste beautiful matured Merlots or refreshing Pinot Gris.
Winemakers themselves were unfortunately not there that day to present their wines. However, it was a nice mix of wine merchants specializing in American wines and one or two wineries themselves. In any case, the "Flavor of America in Vienna - Wine Edition" event was great fun and once again showed that more should be done with wines from America. With this in mind, we can only say that hopefully there will be a continuation of the event next year.
